Pre-populated Demographic Data

Overview
If your Annual Plan is a Comprehensive Needs Assessment, census data will be pre-populated according to the federal poverty limit identified in the setup module. The following instructions detail how data is pulled from the American Community Survey to be populated in National PEARS.

How to View Demographic Data from ACS

  1. Go to data.census.gov
  2. Search for table S1701
  3. Under Geos -> Click “County” under “All Geographies” -> Select “All Counties within United States and Puerto Rico”
  4. Deselect “Margin of Error”
  5. Select “Transpose”
  6. Select the banner “S1701 | Poverty Status in the Past 12 Months” and select the 2022 ACS 5-Year Estimates Subject Tables
  1. Go to https://data.census.gov/mdat/#/
  2. Select the ACS 5-Year Estimates and the most recent Vintage
  3. Choose the POVPIP variable
  4. Chose the RAC1P variable
  5. In the “Data Cart” tab, Create two Custom Groups for POVPIP:
  6. Create one group for 0 – 185 and one for 186-200
  7. Name the groups lt_185 and 185-200 respectively
  8. Create a Custom Group for RAC1P:
  9. Create a custom group for each race option on the demographics page
  10. For each of the custom groups name them the matching slug from the race fixture.
  11. Put “Some Other Race Alone” and “Two or More Race” as “other”
  12. In the “Select Geographies” tab, select the needed states.
  13. In the “Table Layout” tab, Change Values in table Cells to “Count” and enable “Show Total”
  14. Put POVPIP_RC1 in Columns
  15. Put “Selected Geographies” and “RAC1P_RC1” in rows with “Selected Geographies” being first.
  16. Set Weight to “Person weight”
  1. Go to https://data.census.gov/mdat/#/
  2. Select the ACS 5-Year Estimates and the most recent Vintage
  3. Choose the POVPIP variable
  4. Chose the HISP variable
  5. In the “Data Cart” tab, Create a Custom Group for POVPIP:
  6. In the custom group create one group for 0 – 185 and one for 186-200
  7. Name the groups lt_185 and 185-200 respectively
  8. Create a Custom Group for HISP:
  9. Create a custom group for “Not Spanish/Hispanic/Latino” and name it “Non-Hispanic/Latino”
  10. Rename “Not Elsewhere Classified” to “Hispanic or Latino”
  11. In the “Select Geographies” tab, select the needed states.
  12. In the “Table Layout” tab, Change Values in table Cells to “Count” and enable “Show Total”
  13. Put POVPIP_RC1 in Columns
  14. Put “Selected Geographies” and “HISP_RC1” in rows with “Selected Geographies” being first.

  2. Select the ACS 5-Year Estimates and the most recent Vintage
  3. Choose the POVPIP variable
  4. Chose the AGEP variable
  5. In the “Data Cart” tab, Create a Custom Group for POVPIP:
  6. In the custom group create one group for 0 – 185 and one for 186-200
  7. Name the groups lt_185 and 185-200 respectively
  8. Create a Custom Group for AGEP:
  9. Create a custom group for each age group option
  10. In the “Select Geographies” tab, select the needed states.
  11. In the “Table Layout” tab, Change Values in table Cells to “Count” and enable “Show Total”
  12. Put POVPIP_RC1 in Columns
  13. Put “Selected Geographies” and “AGEP_RC1” in rows with “Selected Geographies” being first.
  14. Set Weight to “Person weight”

  12. Set Weight to “Person weight”

How to View SNAP-Participation Data

  1. Go to https://www.fns.usda.gov/pd/supplemental-nutrition-assistance-program-snap
  2. Download Bi-Annual (January and July) State Project Area/County Level Participation and Issuance Data zip 
  3. Open the most recent Excel file
  4. SNAP Participation is listed in column L
